KARACHI: Pakistan will field four shuttlers in the Commonwealth Games slated to be held at Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4-15.
National champion Murad Ali, former national champion Hafiz Irfan Saeed, reigning national champion Mahoor Shehzad and former national champion Palwasha Bashir will be part of Pakistan’s touring party.
Pakistan Badminton Federation’s (PBF) secretary Wajid Ali Chaudhry told ‘The International News’ on Friday from Lahore that the camp for the shuttlers would be held at the Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad, from February 15.
“Yes, the camp will begin from February 15 at Islamabad,” Wajid said. He said that top ten men and women would be put in the camp.Pakistan will be fielding a 98-member contingent in the Australia event in ten disciplines. The other disciplines are athletics, swimming, shooting, squash, hockey, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and table tennis.
Wajid also said that the three-month camp of the juniors (Under-17, Under-19) completed on Friday at Islamabad.The camp was supervised by Malaysian coach Arwand whose services had been hired by the PBF through Badminton Asia.
Wajid said that effort would be made to bring in a foreign coach in future too.“We are trying our best to develop the game. And I am very much confident that in the next few years we will be able to make good progress,” he hoped.“Gradually we will try to resurrect the game,” said Wajid, also a former international.
