KARACHI: Rizwan Senior was on Thursday named the captain for the three-nation tournament in Oman, which also involves Japan.
Arsalan Qadir was named the vice captain. Chairman national selection committee Islahuddin Siddiqui announced a 21-member team after two-day trials at Edhi stadium on Thursday.
On the last day of the trials, a match was organised between the senior and junior teams, which the former won by 2-1. Irfan Ahmed was not included in the team because he will not be available for Commonwealth Games due to his professional engagements in professional hockey.
The Oman tournament will be organised on double league basis. Islahuddin said that 21-member team was selected keeping in mind the future requirements as the Green-shirts were to participate in a number of important events this year.
He said the Green-shirts would take some time to become a formidable side. He said that Japan would be the main rival of Pakistan as they had defeated Pakistan twice and drawn once in the recent past.
He said the players had been selected on the basis of their form and fitness as seen during the training camp and the trials. The chief selector said Azfar Yaqoob and Ammad Shakeel were selected because they had taken NOC from the PHF for playing professional hockey. “Yes, they missed the camp, but they had obtained NOC,” Islah explained.
